Botany on the edge: new tools to address challenging cliff environments
Ben Nyberg, Drone Program Coordinator, NTBG

Over the past seven years, we have been deploying drones to assist in plant conservation. This technique has led to critical findings in the distribution and abundance of Hawaii's flora. While gaining knowledge about habitats and ecosystems is incredibly valuable, many of the mapped plants were inaccessible. In 2021, with the aid of robotics experts, we developed a cutting-edge new tool to collect plant material remotely. These new tools are significantly contributing to the conservation of Native Hawaiian plants and have unlocked areas that seemed impossible to work in.
